Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What should I wear to my Classes?
We recommend comfortable, breathable activewear that allow you to move freely and stretch with ease.
Socks are required for all group classes and private Pilates sessions for hygiene and safety purposes. We recommend grip socks for added stability and support so you move more confidently on the equipment.
If you’re attending a Physiotherapy session, socks are not required unless your session includes Pilates-based exercises. In that case, you’ll be asked to put on socks before starting the movement portion.
Forgot to bring socks? No worries – Focus grip socks are available for purchase at our front desk at $15 a pair. We also have Tavi and ToeSox available in a variety of designs.
How do I book a Pilates or Physiotherapy session?
You can book your sessions easily through the Focus App. Just download it from the App Store (for iPhone users) or Google Play (for Android users). From there, you’ll be able to purchase packages, view schedules, and make your bookings all in one place.
Pilates
How often should I do Pilates to see results?
For the best results, we recommend practising 2 to 3 times a week. Consistency is key – regular sessions will help your body adapt more quickly, leading to noticeable improvements in strength, flexibility, posture, and overall movement.
That said, even one session a week can still provide meaningful benefits – especially when you’re just getting started. Every bit counts, and your body will thank you for showing up!
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
While Pilates isn’t primarily a cardio workout, it plays a powerful role in supporting weight loss and overall body composition. By building lean muscle mass, Pilates helps to increase your metabolic rate, which can boost calorie burn over time – even at rest.
The key benefits of Pilates include:
-
Improved posture and alignment
-
Increased muscle strength and tone
-
Enhanced flexibility, mobility, and body awareness
For effective weight management, Pilates works best when combined with cardiovascular exercise (like walking, swimming, or running) and a balanced, nutritious diet.
In short: Pilates helps sculpt and strengthen your body, and is a valuable part of any sustainable fitness and wellness routine.
I have back pain. Can I still do Pilates?
Pilates can be highly beneficial for improving spinal strength, mobility, and posture—but it depends on the nature of your back pain.
If you have chronic or serious back pain, we recommend seeing one of our Physiotherapists first. They can assess your condition and determine whether Pilates is appropriate for you at this stage.
If you’ve received clearance from your Physio, you can:
-
Start with Private Pilates sessions for personalised guidance and support
-
Join our Back Care Reformer class, designed and led by a physiotherapist specifically for those managing back discomfort
For mild back aches or stiffness, Pilates is often an excellent way to build core strength and ease tension. Just be sure to let your instructor know about any discomfort before your class or private session, so they can tailor the exercises to your needs.
I have an old injury. Can I still do Pilates?
Yes, you can – and Pilates may actually help! Pilates is often recommended to support recovery, improve mobility, and prevent injuries from recurring.
Before joining a group class or private session, please inform your instructor about your injury. They’ll make the necessary modifications to ensure the exercises are safe and suitable for you.
If you’re unsure about where to begin, we recommend starting with a Private Pilates session, where your instructor can assess your movement and tailor a program to your needs.
If you’re currently in pain or dealing with an unresolved injury, it’s best to book an initial consultation with one of our Physiotherapists. They’ll help determine the most appropriate next steps – whether that’s rehab, one-on-one Pilates, or joining a group class when you’re ready.

What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
While Pilates and Yoga share some similar benefits – like improved flexibility, strength, and mind-body awareness – they are quite different in focus and approach.
Pilates is a form of exercise that targets core strength, posture, and overall body conditioning. Movements are performed with precision and control, often in flowing sequences with repetitions. It’s especially effective for rehabilitation, joint mobility, and building deep muscular strength – particularly in the core.
Yoga, on the other hand, is a holistic practice that combines physical postures, breathwork, and meditation, often rooted in spiritual or philosophical traditions. Poses are typically held for longer durations, promoting flexibility, balance, and mental clarity.
How long will it take to feel or see a difference in my body?
Progress varies for each person and depends on factors like your current fitness level and how consistently you practise.
As Joseph Pilates famously said:
“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”
That transformation comes with regular practice, and many of our clients start noticing improvements in posture, strength, and body awareness within just a few weeks.
I’ve never done Pilates before. How do I get started?
Welcome! The best way to begin your Pilates journey is with our $28 trial class, which you can easily book through the Focus App.
If you’re new to the Reformer, we recommend starting with our Beginner Classes, where you’ll be introduced to the key principles of Pilates and guided through movements that build a strong foundation.
After your trial, you can take advantage of our new client packages at a special rate – these are designed to help you ease into Pilates confidently, with a focus on proper technique and body awareness. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Terms and conditions apply.
What if I’m late for class?
We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes early so you have time to set up your Reformer and settle in before class begins.
Pilates classes are carefully sequenced to warm up your body in the first 10 minutes, preparing you safely for more complex movements that follow. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, you won’t be allowed to join the class for your own safety and to avoid disrupting the session.
We appreciate your understanding and punctuality!
