Advanced Tactile Cueing in Pilates: Making Touch Count (31 Oct)

Touch is one of the most powerful tools we have as teachers, and one of the easiest to use carelessly. A well-placed tactile cue gives the client sensory feedback they can’t get from verbal instruction alone, sharpening their proprioceptive awareness of where a body part is and how it’s moving. But wherever you make contact, the client’s attention goes. A tactile cue only works if it directs focus exactly where you intend, and that depends on more than hand placement. Area of contact, pressure, direction, timing, and how you apply and release the cue all shape what the client feels and what they learn from it. Hands in the “right” place aren’t enough if the rest of the cue isn’t deliberate.
This workshop is for instructors who already use tactile cueing and want to refine it. We’ll break down the key variables of an effective cue, look at common ways cues get lost or misread, and practise strategies for making each cue clear, specific, and purposeful. You’ll apply these principles across a range of mat and equipment exercises, so you leave able to make conscious, deliberate tactile decisions rather than habitual ones.
Suitable for qualified Pilates instructors and instructors in training with a working knowledge of the repertoire.

Past Workshops & Events
Unravel the Thoracic Spine – Workshop by Dan Dittmar (PPA & NPCP CEC Accredited)
When it comes to improving our clients’ movement, the thoracic spine is a true game-changer – and often, a challenge. Restrictions here can throw off everything from shoulder mobility to lumbar stability, making it one of the most important areas for us to work on.
But as many of us know, unlocking thoracic extension and rotation isn’t always easy. That’s why this hands-on workshop dives into practical, creative strategies to help you guide your clients toward better movement.
In this insightful session with Focus Head Instructor and Polestar Senior Educator Daniel Dittmar, we will explore a variety of approaches using the mat, small props, and selected studio equipment – playing with positioning, blocking, and cueing to unravel thoracic mobility. This workshop received fantastic response at last year’s Polestar Asia Conference in Thailand and we’re thrilled to bring it back by popular demand!

This workshop series is designed to give Pilates instructors and movement professionals a clearer, more practical understanding of anatomy. Rather than getting lost in memorising tiny details, we’ll focus on how anatomy applies to real- life movement, teaching you how to see the body with fresh eyes.
Across three focused sessions, you’ll learn how to locate key anatomical landmarks, recognise common misalignments, and better understand the body’s interconnected systems – skills that will directly enhance your teaching and practice.
Who would benefit from these workshops:
– Pilates instructors and instructors-in-training
– Sports and movement professionals
– Pilates and/or movement practitioners with basic anatomical knowledge
All workshops can be joined in-person at Focus Movement or online via Google Meet. The meeting link will be sent to you after registration.

🌟 Foot to Pelvis and Gait
🗓️ 9th May (Sat)
⏰ 3 – 6pm
📍 Focus Movement or online via Google Meet
In this session, we’ll explore the intricate connections from the foot to the pelvis, and how they shape the way we stand, move, and walk. You’ll gain insight into the structural and muscular relationships that support weight-bearing, balance, and propulsion – key components in efficient and pain-free gait.
Through hands-on assessments and identification of anatomical landmarks on different bodies, we’ll examine how foot mechanics influence the knees, hips, and pelvis, and how disruptions in this chain can impact overall movement quality. Expect to leave with a clearer understanding of how to assess, cue, and optimise lower limb function from the ground up!

🌟 Pelvis, Spine and Thorax
🗓️ 30th May (Sat)
⏰ 3 – 6pm
📍 Focus Movement or online via Google Meet
In this session, we’ll explore the central axis of the body – the pelvis, spine, and thorax – and their vital roles in stability, mobility, and functional movement. This trio forms the powerhouse of the body, influencing everything from posture and breath to load transfer and rotational control.
Through practical assessments and palpation of anatomical landmarks, we’ll investigate how alignment, muscular balance, and movement patterns in these regions affect core integration and full-body coordination. You’ll learn to observe subtle imbalances, cue more effectively, and optimise the interplay between stability and mobility throughout the trunk.

🌟 Shoulder Girdle, Thorax and Upper Extremities
🗓️ 20th June (Sat)
⏰ 3 – 6pm
📍 Focus Movement or online via Google Meet
In this session, we’ll dive into the dynamic relationship between the shoulder girdle, thorax, and upper limbs. You’ll explore how the spine and ribcage influence shoulder positioning and function, and how to effectively access and optimise that connection.
We’ll also look at how movements of the arms and upper body can impact spinal mechanics, giving you a deeper understanding of integrated, functional movement from the inside out.

Focus Movement is an integrated Pilates, physiotherapy and movement studio that offers a holistic approach to health and fitness. The studio’s Physio-Pilates programme was specially designed to help clients with injury rehabilitation and to improve their fitness, all at the same time. So, whether your goal is to walk without pain or train for a 10K run, the Focus Movement team can support you on your journey every step of the way, no matter your age, fitness level or health condition.
Along with Pilates Reformer and Pilates Mat, the Raffles Place-based studio offers a range of specialised movement classes designed to help different parts of the body or conditions. For example, Stretch & Release helps alleviate muscle tension and joint stiffness, Backcare Reformer is designed specifically for people with back and neck pain, and Prenatal Reformer helps prepare women’s bodies for birth and recovery. Other group classes include Spine & Hip Mobility, and Strength & Conditioning, which incorporates Pilates exercises and suspension training.
In addition to Pilates and exercise treatment, the studio’s team of experienced physiotherapists use manual physiotherapy techniques like joint mobilisation and soft tissue massage, and electrotherapy, for optimal results. Specialising in everything from back pain, sports injuries and orthopaedic conditions to neurological disorders and post-surgery recovery therapy, their goal is not just to treat the symptoms but also get to the root cause of the condition itself.

Hear from head physiotherapist Dragana Obajdin, who has over 30 years of experience as a physio, and more than 15 years of experience practising Rehabilitation Pilates:
“At Focus Movement, you can expect a physiotherapist to assess your condition, then work with you to improve strength, and stabilise your core and other muscles, through a combination of physio and Pilates work.
We are one of the only clinics in Singapore to offer 60-minute initial physiotherapy assessments. We want to ensure you get assessment and treatment right from your first session with us.
For me, it is so satisfying to see the improvement of our patients both physically and mentally, and helping them to live their lives without aches and pains.”
